Hunting for a Headboard

Anthony and I are lucky enough to have what we like to call a “vacation bedroom” in my mom’s lake house. Right now it is a little blah – since my mom had the house built, she had everything painted plain white and is slowly decorating each room. We were there this weekend for Easter, and she asked me to start thinking of some furniture for our room (it just has a plain bed and a little side table now).

We have this duvet cover from Ikea on the bed:

So I am looking for creative DIY headboard ideas to make the room bright and cheery. Here’s some that I love:

Amazing bed from Organized Design

Wallpaper headboard from Martha Stewart

Fun painted headboard

Large Canvas Headboard

I think that if we pick up one of the bright colors from the duvet to paint the walls, then do the headboard in a contrasting bright color, it will be awesome. I also think that this really cheap Ikea bed would be great painted a bright color:

It’s only $49.99

4th Birthday Presents

I gave my nephew his birthday gifts yesterday:

It was awesome. I think the best thing about kid’s birthdays are how excited they get about opening presents. So I wrapped 8 of them.

Since it was his 4th birthday, I went to party city and bought 4 of each of a bunch of different things:

It took him about 20 minutes to open all of the gifts and he was so excited.

I made some easter eggs

My fingers are blue because I spent an hour tonight holding empty eggs in dye. But I made some really cool easter eggs:

I like to empty eggs instead of hard boiling them, that way we can use them again every year. I think my mom still has some of the eggs I painted in grade school.

This year I have a Silhouette machine, so I cut our names out of sticky vinyl and applied them to the eggs before putting them in the dye. I was really happy with how they came out! You don’t need to buy a egg-specific dying kit either, I just used regular food coloring and white vinegar.

My sister is having a baby in May, so I made one for the new baby too. It says Hiccup on one side, and Dude on the other (the names my niece and nephew picked).

April Showers

We had pink carnations at our wedding 3 and a half years ago, and every once in a while (probably about once a month), Anthony brings me a few bunches from the grocery store. He brought these home tonight. Love.

Happy Birthday Andrew!

Sunday is my nephew Andrew’s 4th birthday. He is the funniest kid ever, and last summer he told us that his 3 favorite things are Batman, sweatpants, and bandaids. I made him a card tonight with some of his favorite things.
I am making him some presents tomorrow too.

Our House is Never Going to be the Same…

I learned that you can make a cake in the microwave. About five minutes ago, I told Anthony that I wanted some cake. Now I am eating some. Miraculous.

From this recipe:

6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons sugar
1/8 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
3 tablespoons water
3 tablespoons oil
dash vanilla extract

Mix together dry ingredients in the mug, wet ingredients in a separate bowl.

Stir both together, then put mug in microwave on high for 3 minutes. The cake will rise above the top of the mug (it’s fine to watch).

Remove the mug from the microwave.

Flip mug over and shake cake out onto plate.

I am going to be eating A LOT of cake.
